The town is first mentioned in a 9th-century copper plate inscription of the Gurjara-Pratihara king Nagabhata I. Bundi was the capital of the kingdom of Bundi. The Bundi dynasty was founded by Rana Sanga, the son of Rana Hammir of Chittor. The town was the scene of a battle between the Mughals and the Marathas in 1727.
