Gwalior is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is located on the Malwa Plateau, in the northern part of the state, and is the administrative center of Gwalior District and Gwalior Division. The city and its fortress, Gwalior Fort, are named after the Rajput ruler, Maharaja Jay Singh of the Tomar dynasty, who founded the city in the 15th century. Gwalior is one of the major tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh. The city has many historical monuments, including the Gwalior Fort, the Jai Vilas Palace, the Scindia Museum, the Teli Ka Mandir, and the Sas-Bahu Temples. The city is also known for its music, with the Gwalior Gharana tradition of Hindustani classical music having been born here.
