Istanbul Enjot Panoramic View from Galata Tower The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata district of Istanbul, Turkey. The Galata Tower was built by the Genoese in 1348 as part of the defences of the city. It is the only surviving Genoese tower in Istanbul. The Galata Tower has an external diameter of 9.75 metres (32.1 ft) and an internal diameter of 6.5 metres (21.3 ft). It is 66.90 metres (219.0 ft) high, with a total of 248 steps. The tower has two main storeys, an upper and a lower. The upper storey has a diameter of 3.7 metres (12.1 ft) and the lower storey has a diameter of 2.4 metres (7.9 ft). The lower storey is open at the top. The tower is made of stone and brick. The Galata Tower was damaged by an earthquake in 1894 and restored by the Italian architect Domenico Costanzo. It was renovated again in the 1970s. The Galata Tower is now a tourist attraction. It has a panoramic view of the city.
