Sunabeda was known as "Sonepur" in ancient times. It was ruled by the Somavamsi dynasty. The city is mentioned in the "Mahabharata" as a center of learning. The city was sacked by the armies of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th century. It was later ruled by the Gajapati dynasty of Odisha. The city was ceded to the British East India Company in 1803. It was made a part of the Nizam's dominions in 1853. The city was transferred to the British Raj in 1866. It was made part of the Central Provinces in 1903. The city was merged with the Indian Union in 1947.
