The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1965 and covers an area of 1,412 km² (545 sq mi). It is located in the Gir-Somnath range of hills, in the Kathiawar peninsula. The park is open every day of the year from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
