Chemrey Monastery


Chemrey Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in the Leh district of Ladakh, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The monastery is situated in the village of Chemrey, about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Leh. The monastery was founded in the late 10th century by the great scholar and translator Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo. The main temple at Chemrey is said to have been built by Rinchen Zangpo's disciple, Drango Lotsawa.
 
The monastery is home to a large number of images and statues of the Buddha, as well as a large collection of thankas and murals. The monastery also has a large library containing many important Buddhist texts.
Chemrey Monastery is one of the most important centres of learning in Ladakh and is frequented by many students of Buddhism.
