Khardung La Pass

Khardung La Pass is a high mountain pass in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the world's highest motorable pass, with an elevation of 5,602 metres (18,380 ft). The pass is on the route between Leh and the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The pass was opened to motor traffic in 1988. Prior to this, only horses and carts had been able to cross it. The first successful motor crossing was made by a team of four led by Lt. Col. Narendra Singh of the Indian Army. The pass is not open all year round.
