The museum is housed in the former palace of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, the "Palazzo Pubblico". The palace was built in the 13th century and enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries. The museum has a collection of artworks from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The collection includes paintings by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Beccafumi, Pietro Perugino, Andrea del Sarto, and Michelangelo. The museum also has a collection of sculpture, including works by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Bernini.
