The museum was originally located in the Mikhailovsky Palace, but it was soon moved to the Winter Palace, which is now the residence of the Russian president. In 1917, after the Russian Revolution, the Russian Museum became a state museum. In 1933, the Russian Museum moved to its current location in the city of Saint Petersburg. The Russian Museum is one of the largest museums in the world.
