The Dandi March was a march undertaken by Mahatma Gandhi from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, Gujarat, to make salt in defiance of the British salt tax. On 12 March 1930, Gandhi set out on the march from Sabarmati Ashram, accompanied by 78 of his volunteers. On 6 April 1930, Gandhi and his followers reached Dandi and made salt by boiling seawater. The march and the subsequent breaking of the salt law were important milestones in the Indian independence movement.
