History of Aurobindo Ashram

The Aurobindo Ashram was founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghosh and his companion Mirra Alfassa, known as "The Mother". Sri Aurobindo had been a leader of the Indian nationalist movement and had been imprisoned for his activities. After his release from prison, he moved to Pondicherry, in southern India, where he and the Mother established the ashram. The ashram is dedicated to the spiritual realization of human potential and the transformation of consciousness.
