The city lies in the Malabar Coast region and is located about 180 km south of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Kottayam has a population of 344,183 and is the seventh most populous city in Kerala.
The city is an important commercial centre in the district and is home to several rubber plantations and a large coir factory. Kottayam is also an important theological centre in the Saint Thomas Christian community. The city is connected to other parts of the state by road and rail. The city was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore.
Kottayam is an important tourist destination in the state.
