About Mahabalipuram The ancient city of Mamallapuram, also known as Mahabalipuram, is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
Mahabalipuram is known for its rock-cut temples and sculptures. The city was the capital of the Pallava dynasty, which ruled southern India from the 3rd to the 9th centuries. The most famous monuments in Mahabalipuram are the Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas), and the Mahishasuramardini Mandapa (Mandapa of the Goddess Mahishasuramardini).
