The site contains the remains of the city of Champaner, the capital of the former sultanate of Gujarat. Pavagadh Hill, a dominant feature of the site, is a sacred Hindu site with a temple of goddess Kali on the summit. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004.
