Ajanta and Ellora Caves

Ajanta and Ellora caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India. The caves include Hindu, Buddhist and Jain monuments, dating from the 2nd century BC to the 10th century AD. The Ajanta Caves are about 30 kilometers from the city of Aurangabad, while the Ellora Caves are about 34 kilometers from Aurangabad. The Ajanta Caves are a group of 29 caves carved out of the vertical face of a cliff of the Deccan plateau, about 120 kilometers northeast of Mumbai. The caves were excavated in two phases, the first phase starting in the 2nd century BC and the second phase in the 5th century AD. The Ellora Caves are a group of 34 caves, including Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments, dating from the 5th century BC to the 10th century AD. The Ellora Caves are located about 34 kilometers from Aurangabad.
