Harsil

Gangotri is a small town in the Uttarkashi district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. The town is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, at an altitude of 3,048 metres (10,000 ft). Gangotri is the source of the Bhagirathi River, and is the place where the river is worshipped as the goddess Ganga. The original Gangotri Temple was built by the king of Tehri Garhwal, Maharaja Pratap Shah in the early 18th century. The temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 1839, and was rebuilt in the early 1970s.
