Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem

Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem

The Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem is one of the four quarters of the walled Old City of Jerusalem. It is the smallest and oldest of the four, and is located in the southeastern corner of the city. The Armenian Quarter is the only Christian Quarter of the Old City, although the Greek Orthodox and Catholic quarters are also Christian. It was founded in the 4th century by Armenian refugees fleeing from the persecutions of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great. The Armenian Quarter covers an area of 0.025 km² (0.01 sq. miles) and has a population of about 1,000. It is home to the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The quarter is surrounded by the Muslim Quarter on the north and east, the Jewish Quarter on the south, and the Christian Quarter on the west.
