Kaza, located in the Spiti Valley in the north-western Himalayas, is the district headquarters of the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Kaza is the largest town and administrative center of the Spiti Valley. It is also the headquarters of the Spiti subdivision. The town is located on the Spiti River, at an altitude of 3,600 metres (11,811 feet). The surrounding area is dry and cold with an average rainfall of only 575 millimetres (22.6 inches) per year. Winters in Kaza are very cold, with temperatures often dropping below −20 °C (−4 °F). Kaza is connected to the rest of India by road. The nearest airport is at Bhuntar, located about 50 kilometres (31 miles) away.
