Tharangambadi, also known as Tranquebar, is a town in the Nagapattinam district of the Tamil Nadu state in India. It is a former Danish colony located on the Coromandel Coast. Tharangambadi, originally Tranquebar, is a town on the Coromandel Coast in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, in the Mayiladuthurai district. It is located 15 kilometres north of Karaikal, near the mouth of the Kaveri River's Uppanar distributary. The building was built in the 14th century. The Masilamani nathar (Shiva) temple was constructed in 1306, on land donated by Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan I. This temple is currently the oldest monument. Until the arrival of the Danes in 1620, the area was ruled by the Thanjavur Nayak state. Because Danish admiral Ove Gjedde saw the area as a viable commercial centre, he struck an agreement with Raghunatha Nayak and erected Fort Dansborg.
