Officially known as the Columbus Monument, this towering structure commemorates the famed explorer Christopher Columbus. It is located in the Plaça de Colom in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The Columbus Monument was built in 1888 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to the Americas. It is made of granite and stands at a height of 67.5 meters (222 feet). At the base of the monument, there are four statues of lions representing the four kingdoms of Spain at the time of Columbus’ voyage. The Columbus Monument is open to the public and offers visitors excellent views of the Barcelona skyline.
