Pamukkale

Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle in Turkish, is a natural wonder in the Denizli Province in southwestern Turkey. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. The travertine terraces and pools at Pamukkale are filled with hot water from the nearby Hasan Dağı volcano.

The water is a pale, milky blue and is said to be therapeutic due to its high calcium carbonate content. Visitors can bathe in the pools or drink the water, which is said to cure various ailments.

 

The terraces were formed over thousands of years as hot water and limestone deposits flowed over the surface, creating a surreal landscape. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise or sunset when the soft light illuminates the terraces in a range of colors.

Pamukkale is also home to the ancient ruins of the city of Hierapolis, which was founded in the second century BC. The ruins include a theater, baths, and a basilica.
