The temple is believed to have been built by the Ganga dynasty kings and is said to have been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The present structure is said to have been built by the Hoysala kings in the 12th century. The temple has a massive Gopuram or tower and a large compound. The temple is famous for its exquisite sculptures and carvings.
