The Nikolaiviertel is a historic district in the Mitte borough of Berlin. It is located along the Spree River, immediately east of the Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) and the Fernsehturm (TV Tower). The Nikolaiviertel was first settled in the 13th century by German merchants. It was named after the Church of St. Nicholas (Nikolaikirche), which was built in 1230. The Nikolaiviertel was heavily damaged in World War II, but has been restored since then. Today, the Nikolaiviertel is a popular tourist destination, with many restaurants, bars, and shops. The Berliner Dom, the Fernsehturm, and the Berliner Rathaus (City Hall) are all located in the Nikolaiviertel.
